![]() ![]() *and before Honor replies to this, for every Craterhoof and Cyclonic we get, we get a dozen Teferi's Protections or Fierce Guardianships or Arcane Signets. ![]() So Wizards isn't faultless here, but there's multiple different factors driving Commander in the direction its going, and Maro himself couldn't put the brakes on all of them. And I feel like that's homogenized the format in a different way because the play experience is often very similar across a bunch of different games: everybody races to get the biggest value pile until someone hits critical mass. Not so much support online for, say, Ladies Looking Left tribal, or 'Fallen Empires told through cards' or other weird Jonny approaches to EDH. That's what you get when you have a bunch of people telling you the best synergies for every remotely popular strategy. But part of it is also that EDHREC and Game Knights and the like have pushed a particular kind of deckbuilding style to the front: highly synergized Timmy/Spike valuetown decks. That's not just an issue of commander cards being pushed (though they often are) it's also an issue of Commander not serving the purpose it originally served: to provide an environment for cards that have rotated out of Standard or were too un-Spikey to be competitive during Standard. Part of this is that the number of commander-only staples has pushed a lot of non-commander cards out of the format*. I remember when the power level 7+ options for monored could be counted on two hands.Īt the same time, the ethos of the format has shifted to allow for less creativity in general. We do have more viable mechanical strategies. ![]() Speaking as someone who's largely played randos in Commander instead of working with a playgroup, I think Maro is technically right. Just like the Sisay's Rings of the world becoming obsolete would have eventually happened even without Commander focused design. It's one of those things that I think would have happened eventually. I guess if they really wanted to make these guys suck in Commander, they could have made them target an opponent or something? But other than that it doesn't seem like a natural consequence of Commander oriented design. Generally speaking it's an effect that happens to be very good in Commander and it will always attract their attention when you print more of it. Did I miss one? I guess there is Slum Reaper, but since it costs more mana and that makes this type of effect worse, it never saw that much play. And then they made Demon's Disciple, which walks back from Plaguecrafter a bit in a way that seems fine. Plaguecrafter is a noticeable upgrade, but still small enough that it seems reasonable, especially without the useful Zombie typing. Merciless Executioner is a straight up clone, but it was only the second one ever, so it seemed fine. I'm not really a fan of it myself, but when you look at the order they were made, it seems hard to pick a point where making a card like that was clearly a bad idea. r/magicTCG is not produced, endorsed, supported by, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
